I~t was tempting. [ a cough. a chuckle. ] But, no, we ... pretty much decided that we shouldn't leave you out.
[ Jen is now able to both breathe good and walk straight, so she shuffles on over to lean against the nearby counter. ] If. You're up for that. Sometime.
[good. everything's good, and the reassuring pat to her shoulder definitely helps Lina calm down so she can finish with the milchreis. it shouldn't take too much longer as long as she can attend to it and there aren't any more surprises.]
If you're both okay with having me, I think it would be a lot of fun. [she's only blushing a little bit! see, she can totally handle it.] So, um. What should I... make. For that kind of occasion?
[ "having you" was kind of the plan, but Jen doesn't say it out loud for modesty's sake. and because she might be afraid if she toed that line right now it could end up ruining breakfast which- ]
I can't think that far ahead when what's cooking now smells so good. [ another deep inhale. ] But, yeah. Christmas. I wasn't sure what your family plans would be - in either of the two cases. [ her adoptive family, or her sisters. Thanksgiving ended up being a wash with the latter from what she gleaned. ]
Also, we should decide if the sleepover would be before or after. I'm thinking maybe after - for the New Year? More time to figure out who to invite, what supplies to get, games, and ... where everyone is going to sleep.
[ okay she kind of said a lot there but 1) she's hungry, so she's distracted, and 2) she's excited. like seriously. it's helping steady her nerves about the whole thing and how it came up. ]
[oh gosh. it's just... okay, well, it is pretty fantastically spiced, and it's going to be a great wake-up meal, and Lina takes it off what low heat it was on to let it cool a little more before she serves it up. and it's probably good that she doesn't have to stir it anymore, because, well.]
Jasmine's eyes aren't red anymore, and she lost the mark on her forehead. [she's kind of. quiet about that, but that should be enough to explain the situation.] And I spent most of Hanukkah with my parents. So I'll just be making a lot of food and bringing it to people, but my actual Christmas should be free. And New Year's, too.
[she's incredibly excited herself, and she'd really really like to be the host of a successful party-slash-sleepover, and. this is better. this is better than thinking about how her sister isn't on the app anymore, or how the only one she heard anything back from after her stupid belated Thanksgiving stunt was Violet.]
Of course, we'll make sure not to keep you super late. [ Jen nods to Kara even as she slides on closer to Lina. ]
You know... before we make NYE plans, I should ask: did anything... big happen on the app? I mean, I see things tend to go with seasons, holidays, stuff like that. But I wasn't. Around for that. [ and she cannot recall anything specific happening around her while in limbo that would have caused her any concern. but would she even? it's like Yin missing out on last August. it's mostly a blank to her. ]
Like, do we need to party in a bunker or something for when the ball drops?
[Lina looks at Jen, then over to Kara with uncertainty etched on her face.]
I only got the app in April of this year. I've never done New Year's on Retrospec before. [it bothers her that she wasn't expecting anything to change. only a little, though. this entire app is about changing—why would 2019 be any different?]
But if anything does happen? [and she's switched over to doling out the milchreis into three glass bowls now that it's had a little bit of time to cool, but she's looking over her shoulder with confidence.] You've got two of the strongest girls in the world here to protect you.
[ there's a brief bout of uncertainty before Kara maneuvers in and the reassurances build up. she turns her head and shrugs her shoulder to bring the hand close enough to plant a kiss on. ]
Heh. You're right. [ Jen smiles and reaches into a drawer to fetch spoons for all of them. ] What am I worried about?
[ certainly not any of them doing anything they aren't in control of. unlike picking up a very warm bowl and taking a spoonful of rice pudding for herself. that's entirely Jen's own impatience at work. ] Hoo, hoo, whew...
[ she huffs and puffs and laughs it off. ] But good! Wow!
[it's softer than a reprimand and has laughter playing at the edges.]
I'm worried about you burning yourself on milchreis! Oh my gosh, cool your mouth off. [she hands the open carton of strawberries over with her free hand, then glances at Kara, trying to look as long-suffering as possible.]
This is why you two are together, isn't it? So you can keep her from hurting herself on food.
[oh her gosh. these two were so, so super cute and Lina could barely take it. but the way Jen was bringing this kind of thing up so casually reminded Lina of something that Vera had told her about Jen's—Yang's powers. and that was definitely worrying. she'd probably have to deal with that later, if Kara didn't keep her girlfriend in line enough on her own.]
So I guess none of us can get hurt like that anymore... [no she definitely had not brought that up before now. time to gloss over it with a playful lilt to her voice.] I'm still with Kara, though. Don't do things that hurt just to prove a point to me about how cool you are.
[ Jen gives Kara a look, but Lina doesn't even seem to skip a beat thereafter. that makes two of them, and it's a little unfair. Jen sticks her tongue out momentarily before shrugging it off with a blush. ][ she goes for dumping a healthy pile of strawberries into her bowl and then mixes it all together. ]
Milchreis! Or if you don't want to say it like that, milk-rice. [she puts the proffered strawberry carton back down and lifts her own bowl.]
It's rice pudding, basically. Just something sweet to start the day. I was going to make something with a little more protein in it, but then we suddenly had company and I realized we were definitely not going to be working out for a while.
[see, she could talk about everything that went into making the milchreis, breaking down what she put into it to make it this sweet, but then Kara just. distracts her.]
That can't be all the exercise I get. Unless you're planning on making it a three-times-a-week thing, and I have stamina, but that's a little much even for me.

[Okay, so still giggling, Kara rights herself and drifts over to put a hand on Lina's shoulder, giving it a reassuring pat.
it's funny but...]
We talked, and everything's good. No mischief in your bed, promise.

I don't know. Something that you like, though.
[She can totally handle it.]
We sort of floated the idea of Christmas? Since that's coming up fast.

[ taking another bite, with much fewer complaints this time. ]
no subject
I mean...I'd rather you not get hurt, babe. Even if it doesn't leave a mark. I kinda like it when I'm the one that does that and not a bowl.
[heh...]

[They know. Even if you're often super lame, Jen.]
So what is this again, Lina?

It's rice pudding, basically. Just something sweet to start the day. I was going to make something with a little more protein in it, but then we suddenly had company and I realized we were definitely not going to be working out for a while.

[she remembers those emotions very well, and she gives Jen another look to gauge her reaction.]
