Heyo, roomie, I got a bite! But there's a catch. She, also, wants to know more about you so I took down some questions from her to you so she can go into this less-than-blind date on the right foot. That's promising if you ask me! In turn, gimme some questions and I'll pass them on. Sound good? Okay, here we go! 1) "What are your biggest interests?" hard mode: I already told her about the cooking you do for me but not like your day jobs, so pick something else 2) "Are there any places off-limits for a first date?" pro tip: don't just go to a bar. far too easy to bail from, IMHO 3) "Any foods to avoid?" I didn't want to answer this one for you, since I've seen you work with a lot of stuff, but I don't know if you're allergic to anything. I probably should have asked this too, huh...
this is the least blind date i've ever seen but this is what i wanted to happen so like sure
1) other than cooking? kind of pulled the rug out from under me on this one jen. j-metal (passcode, lovebites, band maid but not in a creepy way, you know), action anime with like mecha and stuff, gacha games i guess? i had a good conversation with someone on the app about them recently even if it was mostly just me yelling about her boyfriend and his waifus. fuck, i sound like an enormous weeb. i'm trusting you to pretty this answer up.
2) i mean yeah there's probably like a whole tier of places that's appropriate for first dates? and everything not on that tier is probably a bad idea. like it shouldn't be too fancy of a restaurant but it sure as hell shouldn't be fast food. bars are skeezy and there are better places to go to get to know someone. movies also sound pretty easy to bail from. every place sounds easy to bail from if you're bad enough at dating.
3) none of the big 8 food allergens at least. that covers like what, most of food? i should be fine with anything is the point.
you really didn't have to go through all this trouble. i'll, um. i'll come up with questions of my own and let you know.
[ rubbing her forehead. hoo boy, this will take even more work. hurray! she's not even able to sit down and appreciate any of this information on a personal level because of that, so she'll have to look into it later. ]
Don't worry about it. I think I can work with this. Just call me cupid! Or at least, call me committed. I'm just going to ask her to answer the same questions in return. Seems fair, right? You can save the rest for the actual date. Call it thinking ahead.
[this is so awkward. why is she even doing this, she doesn't even really like Jen.
Her other self had done things like this though, right? Sort of. (Not really.) Gone around helping people for no conceivable reason or benefit, and she was a stone cold badass. Maybe a lesson could be learned from her.]
[shit. why is this the thing that Jen actually followed through on? Lina had been dead certain up until this message showed up that her roommate had just forgotten about it like she forgot about most other things that seemed cool and shiny at the time.]
oh right! hello i'm sorry about how sudden all of this has been
[which is of course one way to phrase it. Lina has no idea where to go from here and ends up deleting something self-deprecating before settling on another pleasantry.]
it's alright i mean, a bit out of the blue, haha. i haven't talked to jen in a while, so it was surprising but that isn't your fault
it's nice to meet you too
[okay so far. bland pleasantries are a go.]
would you like to meet up somewhere? no harm no foul if you'd rather not. i know, blind dates require the "dating" part, but i'd understand if that was weird for you
[cool, okay. Lina can put dinner together. she really should've been able to do this sooner, or at least offered it sooner, but... look, she and her roommate haven't gotten along nearly as well as they need to if they actually want to be functional. she has to recognize that Jen is trying—in a lot of different ways—and maybe a conversation over dinner will do it.]
[she serves up a couple plates, actually satisfied with what she managed to make for the first time in a while, and slides them onto the table. and when she sits down, everything immediately feels unnatural. she eats at her desk, with fucking Galneryus blasting a hole through her skull, and she doesn't have conversations with people ever. but. maybe things can be different now.]
[Lina looks over at Jen and says the first serious thing she can think of.]
[ Jen's way of life, social as she may be by comparison, didn't leave a lot of time to just sit at home being idle. she doesn't have a TV in her own room, the living room set might as well be one of those empty cardboard displays at discount furnite shops, and almost all her meals are taken to-go or poured from a blender straight down her gullet.
even the times she does have free she doesn't like to spend it just idling around in her room. she was taught that breeds laziness and so once she was cleaned up she'd just head out, most times without a word, to go walking around town or, in the case of this past week, getting to know the people of the town both on and off the app.
hell, if it wasn't for Retrospec, those who were not closely following local athletics probably wouldn't even know who she was and why she was here. it's kind of a sad existence but it all serves its purpose.
tonight would be different.
tonight, Jen is sitting at the dinner table across from her roommate, who was not at all kidding about her skill in awkward conversation. it's a credit to Jen's iced tea that she doesn't choke on her food. ]
Yeah, ahem, that's, uh. I know. [ excuse her as she clears her throat some more. ] I was there.
Ugh what is UP with people today!? [ Jen's keys aren't even in their little glass dish and she's already letting out a heavy sigh that carries her complaint to an apartment she wasn't sure was empty or not. she's got her towel draped over her shoulder and gym bag as usual, having come straight from there. she's a bit earlier than usual, which is not as unusual as the attitude.
she sees that the bathroom door is open and the lights are off, so that's a good sign at least. a welcome one. ] I feel like I need to wash the stares right off of me...
[ then she raised her voice slightly as she opened her room's door only long enough to deposit her bag right inside the threshold. ] Hey, I know I'm early but I'm gonna be taking a longer shower! Sorry!
[ she doesn't. sound as sorry as she normally would. it was a Bad Day to be out in public for whatever reason, but like hell she was going to interrupt her usual routine on some strangers terms. she wastes zero time and stops for zero seconds on her way into the bathroom. the door slams shut-
-and in about five seconds, there's a HORRIBLE scream from behind the door, and a series of loud crashes. something shatters on the tile floor amidst the kerfuffle and then ... silence. ]
[Lina's been on a fucking hot streak of FCs in her dumb anime tap tap game today, so when she hears Jen come in over her headphones, behind her cracked door, she just says "'kay!" and goes back to picking her next song (a cover of an OP of some turbo anime garbage that she's pretty sure isn't originally Japanese).]
[about 50 notes in, Lina hears the scream. she pulls her earbuds out, leaves her phone where it is, and rushes to the bathroom without even thinking about it, before her body's even kind of realized what it's doing.]
Jen? [give her brain a second to catch up. ha. holy shit. she really is willing to drop everything when it sounds bad enough.] Are you okay? What the hell happened?
[and because she never learns, she tries the door and will absolutely be barging right in given half the chance.]
[The call comes in on the 26th. Togusa is getting desperate, but watching James take the fall for this has forced his hand.]
"Miss Geteilt? This is Detective Hitori Togusa, with the Recolle police. I believe we've spoken before? I need to ask you a few questions about the last month."
[it takes Lina a moment; she can handle phone calls, but phone calls from the police? asking about things that she can still only sort of remember? she's never been in this situation before, so she probably doesn't exactly sound... perfectly calm and collected, but she's still going for pleasant.]
Please, Detective, call me Lina. What can I help you with?
[ Jen warned her this would be coming. Lina may not be thinking she'd go for it quite this quick, but just a couple of days after they had set the "challenge", she's barging into her roommate's room, still dressed for sleep but putting on her best sing-song-y voice for the occasion. there's no point in opening a window since the sun hasn't even peeked its head out from beyond the horizon, and there is enough light flooding in from the main part of the apartment to silhouette her as she makes her way over to the other woman's bedside to shake her shoulder gently. ]
[see, look, okay. Lina's had 8AM classes before. she's made that mistake. this is different from an 8AM class by about three hours and with someone who's way too used to it. Jen barges in while the alarm on Lina's phone is going off, and she opens her eyes slowly, groaning almost out of instinct.]
[her hair's a mess as she rolls over, and she's barely cognizant. right. they were going to do this. give her a second for her brain to start up again and get out of the mindset of that one dream. the peaceful, blue one. she stares at Jen blankly.]
[ the truth about eren: he loves surprises. rather, he likes making the surprises. a young man with too much money to keep to himself, eren calls lina to go out tonight, asking if there were any others who wanted to come, and well.
the state of the g sisters wasn’t really favorable for this. no matter— because lina was still his sister. he comes by her place, dressed semi formal because he’s taking her to a place all chefs would like to go to. slipping out of the butterfly doors of his car (a rather flashy bmw), eren waits in front of the passenger seat with his phone in his hands. ]
Your ride’s here.
[ he sends this as a voice clip message and waits. today was her day. he wanted to make it special and see her smiling. ]
[today might have been her day, but she'd been so caught up in everything, in how the whole city is either conspiring against her or making her the happiest she's ever been lately, that it's been hard for her to actually focus. today has been more or less lucid, and she's grateful for it for now.]
[when she actually walks outside the apartment complex, where she lives with the person who used to be Jen Bowen, she's dressed in the outfit of a woman who knows what posh looks like but isn't trying to let other people know she's dressing posh—if that makes sense. she'd be wearing her white sweater but it has stitches in the side and a lot of it is pink now, so she'll be. retiring that one.]
[her heels clack along the sidewalk and though they're modest, making her only an inch or so taller, she's walking with confidence. right up until she sees her ride and she's forced to gasp with her freshly-painted blue nails coming up to cover her mouth.]
Eren!
[that's it. she can't say anything else because she's already going to try to hug him.]
