Hmm. [ she wasn't so far into Cozyland that the gears couldn't still turn in her head. Jen gave up some measure of comfort for a brief moment, leaning forward and up to squish against Lina's shoulder as she reached across for the phone by the bed. one quick swipe to open the camera up, and another to adjust the exposure a bit. here was enough light in here to just make out the details of the pair of them, all huddled up and looking content.
at first, Jen just left it like that, using the front-facing camera as a sort of mirror as she snaked her mechanical digits out from under the pillow on that side just enough to point in the screen's direction. ]
There she is. What do you think? [ meanwhile, she's wearing a cheeky sort of grin. ]
[Lina opened her eyes enough to see what Jen was doing, and even with this lighting, with Lina's bedhead prominent, they both looked pretty cute. cute enough to make Lina blush, because once what she was seeing actually processed, she realized that this was maybe the most adorable thing.]
Oh my gosh, Jen. [and she tried to reach for the phone, but realized it would mean getting out from under the blanket and decided that it could wait.] Quit it, that's too cute this early.
No, you're too cute this early. It's infectious. [ and, photogenic? well maybe not, but the candid snapshot Jen just took still captures the moment well enough. who cares about the finer details; hopefully, that would be enough to look back on and recall the feelings later on. ]
And if you don't believe me... we could always get a second opinion...
[she knew Jen was right, she was just sleepy and goofing around a little bit. her hands moved up to form a makeshift pillow, palms pressed together, so she could rest her head on it. maybe sleep was going to happen after all.]
What, are you gonna tell Kara to come over right now?
[ well her initial thought was actually to call Zwei in here to lick Lina's face to encourage her to wake up, if nothing else but to play with him a bit. but. the other option wasn't far behind it.
great minds think alike...? ]
I... could. [ it isn't in Jen's nature to question Kara's sincerity in anything. but. she was actively wondering and chewing her lip over whether Kara would encourage that behavior as she said she would, or if she'd feel otherwise. jealous, even. ]
Should I? [ if Lina's at all hesitant, she won't go through with it. once more, everyone needs to be on board with the way things are or there's going to be too much room for regrets. so if Jen comes off as pensive at all it's with good reason. ]
[nope, actually, sleep wasn't going to happen. Jen was distressed, and that cut through Lina's veil of cute cuddly sleepiness easier than she wanted to admit. she didn't shift much, but her tone of voice changed pretty noticeably to everyday, waking Lina.]
If you're worrying this much about it, don't do it right now, okay? [her head tilted as though it was going to help her see the woman behind her any better.] I'd be fine with it, but you know her better than me and you should trust your instincts here.
[even when recovering from sleepy bitch disease, Lina could sometimes sound like she knew what she was talking about.]
[ she didn't even think she was vocalizing it that strongly. just goes to show that Jen really is bad at hiding her emotions. ] Well. I told you what she said to me, and I trust her. Both of you.
[ Jen doesn't consider different "tiers" of trust very often. when it comes to putting her faith in someone to keep her physically safe, or to watch over a secret, that's one thing. holding on to her heart and not crushing it is another. that's what would count the most right now. ]
I wonder if she's even up yet. [ which could be answered by a quick text her way if Lina, again, doesn't stop her. she doesn't even consider for a second that it's not her phone so that might look weird on the receiving end. ]
[Lina's probably not going to stop her, honestly; she probably won't even realize Jen's doing it with her phone, since she's... pretty sure she never gave Jen the code? (she doesn't remember doing it, at least. too bad she totally did.) all she can manage at first is a noncommittal noise that doesn't really mean much of anything; she's not telling Jen not to do it, is the point.]
[in fact, she takes some time to roll over to her back, breaking the spooning part of the spoon but not taking away any part of the closeness if she has anything to say about it. she turns her head and smiles.]
I trust you, too, Jen. [more than her own family, she leaves unsaid.] That's why I let you come in here before sunrise to make me work out. See if Kara's an early bird too.
[ that's the first rule of having your life and personality rewritten by forces beyond your control: change all your passwords. as Line turns to her, Jen ticks away at the screen with her thumb to set up the message with its attachment.
hey I bet this bed's warmer than yours. want to come find out if its true?
that should get the point across.
but she stops from sending it at the last moment to give Lina something of a smirk. ]
A girl could do a lot with that kind of power. [ like this! Google Assistant, send message. ]
[in those intervening 30 seconds, Lina is debating whether she can get away with telling Jen "g-d damn it" before she decides that no, she probably cannot. and then there's a knock, and Lina feels her heartbeat quicken while she bends up as much as she can—]
[oh. it's Kara. okay. calm down, body, you've got this, it's fine, it's just... just relax. lay back down.]
[ Jen is reveling in the brief moment of smugness at catching Lina speechless after that comment. but she nearly jumps out of her skin when the knock happens because she was so zoned in on the moment that she didn't pay attention to the front door opening. good thing Kara has a key. ]
Aah! Hah. That was... fast. [ what did she expect, honestly. ] And would we lie to you? [ Jen is holding Lina's phone, waving with said hand before showing it to Lina. ] Also, I just said the bed was warm.
I mean. she just said the bed was warmer than mine. and asked if I wanted to see.
[Kara opens the door and steps inside...wearing the most inelegant and unsexy thing imaginable. A frog kigu. Waving a warning finger at both girls she kicks the door closed gently.]
I don't want one word. This was a gift from my sister and it's warm as fuck.
[somehow that doesn't sound like exactly the right way Jen could have put it, but whatever, Lina and Kara and Jen are about to be in bed together, probably, and Lina cannot make herself protest it further. especially not when she sees that kigu.]
Will you take six words? Because you look so cute in that.
[once she finishes that sentence, she picks up her heavy comforter and almost invites Kara to join them, but realizes wait... should she be in the middle? she glances over to Jen without saying anything quite yet.]
[ closing the door cuts off the best source of light, save for what little is shining in through the window by now, but there doesn't have to be any light for it to be obvious that Jen has turned her head into the pillow to muffle uproarious laughter. sorry, Kara. it's too early for this thing called "restraint". it's not a mocking laugh, though. it's the loud, melodic, joyful sort.
[Kara floats imperiously over the bed, looking down at both with the disapproval of a petulant teenager, and then sinks down between Lina and Jen. Definitely facing Lina.]
...At least one of you can appreciate the trust I've placed in letting you see my pajamas. Come here, Lina.
[Guess who's 100% getting her cuddles first...even if she doesn't actually mean any of it.]
[even with the light gone, Lina can sort of see what's happening, especially with—well, she'll still never get used to hearing Kara's voice coming from places that it doesn't make sense for a person to be speaking from, but whatever, she'll get over it.]
You don't have to tell me twice.
[she makes some room between the two of them for Kara to get in, then turns herself back so she's facing away from Kara and presses herself against Jen's girlfriend like the greedy cuddle thief she is. spoon her, Kara. you know you want to.]
Jen, you have to pick an animal to be now. You know the rules.
[ once she feels the movement and shift in the mattress from the added weight of a person, Jen starts to calm down. though once she rights herself she finds that her right arm is still pinned below the pillow and with both of the others almost entirely ignoring her in that position. plus, she's got her back to the wall here (or just that side of the bed). can this blanket even fit all three of them? ]
Hahaaah come on! It's cute! I just wasn't expecting it! [ she sidles up against Kara's backside (which isn't a bad place to be, by far) and throws her arm over her waist. it's a pitiful, apologetic tone she's put on now. ] And rules? What rules?
[It totally can because Kara is 100% spooning up against Lina, holding her tight and close. Forehead resting on shoulder close. Of course Jen closing in to her back is fine too, and Kara is warm, from the kigu and the exertion of flying over here and just by virtue of being a super-powered photosynthetic alien.]
It is cute. And you two should get one, seriously.
[This is probably the nerdiest thing Kara owns.]
Also, Lina you're super comfortable. I'm glad you're the nice one.
[Lina is in heaven this morning. first she wakes up cuddling with Jen and now Kara's here also giving her exactly what she wants to be given and she just has. the biggest smile on her face. the blanket should be more than enough to keep all of them warm, because Lina does not ever want to be caught with a limb outside the protective barrier of warm that she creates for herself.]
You cuddle more frogs with honey than vinegar. [which she says as though it makes a lick of sense.] The rules are that everyone in this bed is really cute and should pick a kigu they want to wear. I'd have a big cat or a bear.
If that's the case, I call dibs on bear. [ a beat, ] A talking wolf called me a bear in that fairy tale land so that totally counts. [ backing up her claims in the way a child might insistently do so. totally mature, Jen. ]
Hmph. I'd rather have a face full of hair than this - what is that, sherpa? [ it's fuzzy but it's not her girlfriend. doesn't stop her from nuzzling it for a few moments, though. ]
[She's not moving. She can totally hear Lina's heartbeat and pick out that she's as happy as a clam, and that's reason enough but she also remembers from what Jen said that this happens mostly when she has night terrors.]
You guys are either up early or way late...? Everything okay?
[they're both acting a little childish right now. Kara's practically the responsible adult in the room, which is terrifying. but it's the only thing that's terrifying, because she feels at peace right now, having fun with two of the most important women in her life, cuddled in her bed together. she might be waxing a little sentimental in her own head before Kara's question gets the better of her.]
Early. Jen was gonna make me work out so I don't lose my sick gains.
[ oh, fine, make her do the work. it's not like she deserves the not-so-cold shoulder after laughing at Kara. Jen lifts her hand up long enough to pull the hood down and then run her fingers through her girlfriend's hair to expose her neck. for maximum warmth exposure. ]
Mmhmm. And she used her newfound strength to convince me that this was more important than hitting the gym. Then I remembered what you said, and... [ Jen rested her forehead to the back of Kara's head, letting out a warm, content sigh. ] Welp. Here we are.
Okay. Good. So long as there's not anything going on that I need to punch.
[You know, like bad guys or something. Not that she has any intention of leaving this bed anytime soon.]
It's also good you called because the shop's totally closed...and so we don't have to go anywhere for hours. Or for the rest of the day. Definitely enough time for you to earn your cuddles too, Jen.
